students and veterans

Hillside Grade School’s gymnasium was filled with red, white and blue for its patriotic and informative Flag Day assembly, held on June 13.

The assembly kicked off with a warm welcome to the guests of honor, local veterans and a member of the Sons of the American Legion. Students in the Color Guard then presented arms and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Through a video, students throughout the building shared flag facts and proper flag etiquette. The veterans in attendance then demonstrated how to properly fold the American Flag, with assistance from a student volunteer. Each of the 13 folds has a specific meaning, which the audience learned as they folded.

The assembly concluded with a Q&A, with students asking the veterans “How do veterans celebrate Flag Day?” “When did you serve and how old were you?” and “What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?”

This year’s Flag Day assembly was organized by kindergarten teachers Mrs. Austin, Ms. Ferrara and Mrs. Pecorino, who are on the Building Leadership Team.
