The safety of our students and families is always our highest priority. With the increased use of e-bikes and e-scooters in our community, we would like to remind families of both District expectations and important safety practices.
In accordance with NHP-GCP Board of Education Policy 3290, e-bikes, e-scooters, and other motor-driven vehicles are not permitted on District property. This includes our school entrances, walkways, playgrounds, fields, and other areas of school property and applies during arrival and dismissal as well as after school hours and on weekends.
Our District prohibits the use of e-bikes or e-scooters to ride onto school property. These devices can travel at significant speeds and create a safety concern in areas where young children and families are walking.
We also strongly encourage all families to follow New York State laws and recommended safety practices when using bicycles and e-bikes away from school property, including the use of properly fitted helmets. Children ages 1-13 who ride a bicycle or are passengers are required by New York State law to wear an approved bicycle helmet.
As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, we are sharing an informational flyer provided by the Nassau County Police Department. The flyer highlights important bicycle and e-bike safety reminders, including safe operation and awareness of rules of the road. We encourage all families to review the attached Safety Flyer and discuss safe riding habits with their children.
The District is updating signage at our schools to further reinforce that e-bikes are not permitted on school property.
Please help us keep arrival, dismissal, playgrounds, fields, and school grounds safe for everyone. We appreciate your cooperation and partnership in modeling safe practices for our children.
