Sofia Allyson Ignacio, a recent graduate of Hillside Grade School, has been named a State Merit Winner in the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge, one of the nation's premier middle school science competitions. She is among just 37 students nationwide to earn the distinction.

The competition invites students in grades 5-8 to submit a short video showcasing an original idea that uses science to solve an everyday problem. Entries are evaluated based on creativity, scientific knowledge and communication skills. This year's submissions featured innovative solutions in areas including robotics, home improvement, automotive technology, safety, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and climate technology.

The 37 State Merit Winners, along with four Honorable Mention recipients, were selected for their passion for science and innovation, as well as their ability to clearly communicate their ideas. Each State Merit Winner receives special recognition on the 3M Young Scientist Challenge website and a prize package.

Ignacio was recognized for her project, “Cross Assist,” an innovative safety solution designed to help pedestrians cross the street more safely.
