A Lego robotics team representing the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District participated in the FIRST Long Island Festival at Mineola High School on March 1.
Competing under the name The Historical Hunters, students Michael Mathew, Ethan Nam and Eshaal Zaman took part in this special event after many dedicated Lego Club sessions after school.
This year’s theme, Unearthed, focused on archaeologists and the study of the past. During the event, the team clearly explained their project to the judges, sharing how they designed and built their archaeological dig site, how they coded their project and what they learned throughout the process. The students also demonstrated how they applied the FIRST Core Values, including teamwork, respect and inclusion. In recognition of their strong collaboration and clear understanding of these values, the team received the Core Values Award. This achievement marked a proud moment for the students and a significant accomplishment for the team.
At the festival, the students were accompanied by their coach Gabriella Ferrara and the district’s LEGO Club facilitator Lara Holzkamp. This year, the district had 36 teams participating in Lego Club. To celebrate the hard work and dedication of all participants, the district will host its own Lego Fair on March 25.
