Students walking through hallway in Thanksgiving costumes.

On Nov. 21, Hillside Grade School’s first grade classrooms celebrated their much-beloved annual event, “Balloons Over Hillside.”

After reading “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade” by Melissa Sweet, students designed their own Thanksgiving parade balloons. Each first grader selected a favorite animal or character, colored a detailed illustration and attached it to a balloon. They also churned their own butter right in the classroom.

Families joined the fun on Friday morning to watch the miniature parade. The hallway filled with unicorns, cats, robots, gingerbread people and many other creations held proudly above the students’ heads. Once the parade wrapped up, students and their families worked on a turkey craft together and sampled their freshly made butter spread on cornbread muffins.
