Manor Oaks School community gathered outside to commemorate the 24th anniversary of Patriot Day, on Sept. 11.

Students Maya, Elaina and Alessandra helped to begin the ceremony by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” joined by music teacher Joanna Malaszczyk.

“Patriot Day is a day that provides us a time to remember our freedoms, and the heroes in and around our community and those who help us every single day,” Principal Jane Ruthkowski said. “At this time in our country’s history, 24 years ago, many wonderful, compassionate and heroic deeds occurred from everyday people. Heroes come in the form of police officers, firefighters, first responders, EMTs, doctors, nurses, members of the military, teachers, moms and dads, brothers and sisters. Heroes from all walks of life were everywhere on 9/11, in the days afterwards and beyond.”

In this same spirit of kindness, Ms. Ruthkowski encouraged the students to carry empathy and compassion with them in their daily lives. The school community joined in singing the school’s song, “Ode to Moe,” followed by a moment of silence to show respect for those lost 24 years ago.

One representative from each class then placed an American flag by the school’s 9/11 memorial tree and plaque.
