It was a full house buzzing with excitement as the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park community came together to honor the impressive accomplishments of both students and staff at the board of education meeting on June 9.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Morrison-Raptis congratulated several New Hyde Park Road School students for their recent writing and math successes. Second grader Suu Phyo (not in attendance), fourth grader Nico Semerdjian (not in attendance) and sixth grader Catalina Cuchapin were recognized for being named as winners in the Nassau Reading Council’s s 42nd annual Young Authors’ Contest. Third graders Joshua Howard, Shaoen Wang and Lucas Wu were congratulated for earning first place in the First in Math New York State Mathematics Championship. The team, led by District Mathletes teacher Tammie Svendsen, traveled to Albany to proudly represent their school and compete against eight other top regional teams from across the state. With their win, they brought home $5,000 for their school.
Board President Kathryn Canese then recognized this year’s tenure appointments. Congratulations to: Sara Eivazi, reading teacher; Maya Guzman, teacher; Dina Maiella-Marro, literacy coach; Lisa Meaney, school psychologist; Jennifer Scamell, director of technology and innovation; Rebecca Turano, reading teacher; and Grace Yang, teacher.
The district also honored the retirement of reading teacher Carolyn Weiss, who has worked in New Hyde Park-Garden City Park for more than 20 years.
Following the retirement recognition, the district formally welcomed new teachers into the district: Matthew Jackson, Alyssa Gibaldi, Julia Pohlmann.
