New Hyde Park Road School students Rilla Gao and Joanna Weng

New Hyde Park Road School students Rilla Gao and Joanna Weng were selected as winners in the 2025 Town of Hempstead Recycling Poster Contest, held in celebration of the 55th anniversary of Earth Day. Rilla was a first place winner in the grades 1-4 category, and Joanna tied for second place in the grades 5-8 category.

With support from Reworld, a global leader in sustainable waste solutions, the Town of Hempstead contest invited students to explore important environmental themes such as composting, electronics recycling, and energy conversion, while also showcasing their artistic talents.

Rilla and Joanna were formally recognized at an awards ceremony with Supervisor Don Clavin at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve on April 25. Joanna received a $75 Barnes & Noble gift certificate and a citation, and Rilla received a Barnes & Noble tablet and a citation. Additionally, due to Rilla’s first place award, New Hyde Park Road School received a $500 Barnes & Noble gift certificate. Their artwork is visible on Town of Hempstead garbage trucks, as well.
