Mr. Robert Katulak

Superintendent of Schools

Welcome to the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District.  As your Superintendent of Schools I invite you all to be a participant in our school community either by volunteering your time in many capacities or by attending the numerous events listed in our District calendar or on our website.  Our District is committed to building academic rigor for all students in their quest to achieve excellence in all academic areas.  In addition to preparing our students academically our District strives to prepare students that are responsible citizens in our community who are also life-long learners.  Our school is a vital link to our community and we encourage everyone to take pride in our efforts.

As your superintendent, I encourage you to be informed members of our community and seek answers to your questions regarding our schools directly from the building principals or here at central office. Our goal is to nurture the whole child who will then become a contributing member to our neighborhoods in a positive manner.  School pride, respect and achievement go hand-in hand.  Let us all work as a team to achieve those goals.

Monthly Greetings

September 2010

As we begin a new school year, parents often ask what they can do to help their children be a better student or be more successful in academic achievement or making friends. I would like to offer the following advice called:

ABC’s of Parenthood

Always find some exclusive time for your child.

Broaden their horizons through varied experiences.

Challenge them to set and achieve high goals in life.

Delight in their efforts in school and at home.

Examine your approach so as to keep it loving.

Find something good to say about your child every day.

Guide them in their decisions.

Have a reflective listening ear to their problems.

Insure that you pay attention to their fears.

Joyfully forgive them if they do something wrong.

Keep their confidence.

Live a role model life.

Manage your time to make them your best friend.

Never say no, when you can say “yes”.

Open your home to their friends.

Protect them from an uncaring world.

Quickly show interest in their endeavors.

Remember to meet their emotional and physical needs.

Show them love.

Teach them to treat others as they want to be treated.

Understand they are young and still learning.

Very carefully, mean what you say.

Watch them grow.

eXpect them to follow your rules.

Yield to your children’s preferences, if it isn’t against your principles.

Zealously help your child enjoy life.

I wish everyone an exciting learning and fun-filled year!

August 2010

I hope all our community is enjoying their summer in a safe and restful manner.  We have been very busy as a school district this summer working hard to be sure we have the proper programs in place to meet the needs of our incoming students this September.

Schools across the state are currently being challenged to provide a more rigorous curriculum and raise our standards higher since the NY State Education Department has raised the “cut score” or passing grade on the NY State ELA and Math Assessments for the tests completed during the 2009-2010 school year. Simply stated, this means that a student who was deemed proficient by the state last year with a scale score of 659 at Level 3, is not considered proficient this year with the same score because the proficient scale score has been raised. We will not make excuses for our students’ results, but we will raise our own performance bar and provide them with strategies to meet that proficiency level.

The Board of Education passed the resolution to go forward with the Capital Projects Plan which will be presented for voter approval on October 12. The voter approval gives the district the authority to use the reserve, which has already been saved for, and not incur additional taxation on our homeowners. The details of the plan will be presented at the August 12th Board of Education meeting and presented at subsequent Board meetings, work sessions and PTA meetings. After the August 12th meeting, we will also have the plan posted on our website.

Be sure to come to one of the meetings to hear the process and the timeline for this multi-year, multi-level Capital Projects Plan.
